Frequently Asked Questions
Inspection Requirements
Depending on the type of pressure vessel, its contents and Hazard Category, the inspection requirements for pressure vessels vary.
AS/NZS 3788 – Is the Pressure Equipment In-Service Inspection Standard in which Table 4.1 depicts the inspection interval for the varying types of pressure vessels.
The purpose of the commission inspection is to confirm the applicability of the design registration:
- Assess the quality of the build of the pressure vessel;
- Assess the required interlocks have been fitted; and
- Have a starting point for all future inspections.
If the vessel is formally decommissioned, then AS3788 prescribes the inspection requirements for decommissioned pressure equipment.
Pressure equipment which is not in use but not formally decommissioned is considered to be in use and therefor would require the necessary in-service inspections to AS3788.
Should there be a pressure equipment failure then the following risks may apply in varying degrees:
- OH & S Legislative risks
- Financial risk
- Loss of production/use
Registration & Compliance
Since July 2014 the requirement for registration of pressure vessels ceased. However design registration is still required for pressure vessels with a hazard category of A, B,C or D.
Design registration requires a designer and verifier to sign off on the design of pressure vessels with a Hazard Category of A, B,C or D as being safe.
The designer is the designer of said vessel and the verifier being someone from a Workcover Authority. Dependant on where the design registration paperwork is processed this will determine the issuing authority of the design registration paperwork for the vessel.
Plant Registration is the requirement in all states and territories with the exception of Victoria to register your vessel with the Statutory Authority. IE WorkSafe Victoria.
Design Registration is the design number which should have been stamped on the individual vessel in which the Statutory Authority has already signed off on that the design of this vessel is safe for use in Australia.
Generally, the manufacturer, supplier, importer obtain the design registration. However, there are instances where these parties do not obtain the design registration. Frank Busch Inspection can assist in the processes where no design registration has been supplied or available for your vessel. N.B in some instances the design registration cannot be obtained.
